My husband's family used to go to the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, UT ever year. While Ben and I were dating he would bring me back a gift when he went. I have collected three porcelain masks, they are very different and the Festival does not sell the small ones any more.
Here is what they looked like before I made them into a piece of art to hang in our quest bedroom.
On one of my many trips to Michaels I found a black frame, a little bent and weathed. It was about $8, if I remember correctly.
I did not want to leave the frame plan black and I have not mastered the art of spray painting, I picked out two different types of scrap-book paper. I choose one that had writing on it to go with the theme of Shakespeare plays.
I cut the white paper into strips and applied it with modge podge.
The finished look with white paper.
I decided to use my sisters scrap-booking tool, it makes the paper look like you ripped it. I choose another piece of paper with some color and depth to it.
The awesome yet challenging to use tool...
How my paper looked, I used modge podge to adhere it to the frame.
The finished frame...
Now for the backing of the frame, I used some left over framing mat paper and covered this with some shinny paper. I used my go to for making things stick Styrofoam spray.
I used an exacto knife and cut the mat so it would fit inside the frame.
The pretty shinny paper for the background.
Awesome spray adhesive...
Putting those pretty shinny pieces of paper to work.
I purchased three black small frames to add some depth to the masks.
I arranged them on the finished frame to see how I wanted the spacing to be and adhered those on.
I also placed the masks on the frames to see how I wanted those to hang.
This next step took some time for me to come up with. I could not figure out or decide how I wanted to adhere the masks to the frame. I finally thought about hanging them from the string on the back of two masks.
After deciding where I wanted each mask, using some scissors I poked a small hole into the mat and pushed the string through to the back.
I used packaging tape to hold the strings to the mat.
One of the masks had a ribbon that was not long enough to pull through the hole. I used a paperclip and tape to hold it onto the mat.
The finished project...
